• Alternate Leg Bath

In Chronic Phlebitis or where there is inflammation:-

• Alternate Baths (or Whirlpool) Hot 5min, cold 30sec repeat 4x, 2x daily until symptoms subside.

  • Antiphlogistics
    • Fomentations over affected part, 20 min every 2-3 hours
      • Protected Heating Compress during interval, wring dry or
      • dry Cotton Poultice leave on till next foment
    • Complete rest of part

Problems:

Prevent by routine post-operative treatment see Post Surgery

Early stage:

• Cooling Compress or Ice Bag over affected vein
• limb elevated and kept warm
• TED stocking may be better

After 1-2 days:

• Fomentations used frequently with Ice Bag interval

When temperature is normal and no signs of acute inflammation:

• Scotch Compress

When there is no danger of emboli:

• Massage except over the vein itself

When there is only stasis and oedema:

• vigorous Alternate Douche or other Alternating Applications
