Gastric, Intestinal, Renal and Biliary (Gall) Colics
Spasm of ducts (usually the bile duct or ureters) as a result of stones causing excruciating pain
Treatment:
For pain:-
- Hot Hip and Leg Pack with heavy Fomentations from armpit to pelvis
- After 15min, remove and apply Cold Compress and re-apply Fomentation, continue 1 hour or until pain ceases.
- Hot Tub Bath
- Hot Foot Bath
- Hot Blanket Pack
- Very Hot Sitz
Contra-indications:
For Chronic cases of liver and gallbladder problems:-
- use vigorous Ice Massage instead of compress in above treatment
- Therapeutic Diet with 2 meals a day
- On a healthful regime, gallstones that are not painful do not need removal

Use:
In renal and biliary colic:
- full Hot Blanket Pack or Hot Trunk Pack are often enough to fully relieve pain without morphine.- must be applied very hot - with Hot Water Bottle as soon as heat is tolerable.
- large Fomentations can be used in less severe cases
- full Hot Tub Bath gives good results sometimes
- all the above, if prolonged, require Cooling Compress to head
- no cold follows heat as even brief applications cause pain
