Commonly in shoulder
To Prevent:
- Avoid direct injury to joints
- Prevent allergies as they set bursitis off
- Avoid overuse
- Dress warmly and prevent chilling of joints
- Warm up before heavy work
Treatment:
Acute Phase (first 3 days)
- local Heat for pain but be careful it may cause further pain
- Ice Pack, 5min on, off 1min, 3x or Ice Massage
- Trigger point pressure
- Non weight bearing exercise
- Rest from heavy use
Chronic Phase (after 3 days)
- Alternate Compress - 3min hot, 20sec cold, 4x, 3x daily
- Ice Massage followed by a
- Thorough Trigger Point Workup (massage and exercise)
- Active range of motion exercises eg wall-walking, arm swings
Contraindications
- Hot Local Bath in acute stage.

Acute inflammation of subacromial bursa
- bed rest with arm flexed and abducted as far as pain allows, slightly internally rotated and supported on pillows
- Ice Bag 30min every 2-3hrs - ice pack over two flannel layers is best - heat will increase pain early on
Later as pain recedes:
- increase abduction
- Alternate Compress
- diathermy
In chronic subacromial bursitis:
- diathermy - best
- Fomentations
- infrared lamp all followed by:
- stroking and petrissage to adjacent muscles
- Exercises - begin with pendulum then graduate to active
