Care of the Bedbound Chronically Ill Patient


To prevent:

  • Joint Contractures and Stiff Joints...
    • All joints, especially of the legs, are moved through their full range every day.
  • Phlebothrombosis (Clots in the leg veins)
    • Ask patient to move his feet up and down frequently if he is able
    • Move the legs if the patient is unable to
    • Massage the legs
    • Alternate Compress to lower legs
  • Bed Sores
  • Atelectasis (Collapsed Lung)
    • Alternate to the Chest, very cold to encourage deep breathes. Every 3 hours
    • Squeezing chest as patient exhales to encourage deep breathes
    • If able 10 deep breathes and a cough every hour
